One Final Race Decides Championship

Laser Radial European Championship
Ballyholme YC, Belfast Lough, Northern Ireland

The last day's racing in the Laser Radial European Championship at Ballyholme came a cropper just as so many had during the week, falling victim to the unusually calm conditions on Belfast Lough.
Therefore Friday's scoreboard of one final race decided the championship and Benoit RAPHALEN goes home to France the winner. He put up an impressive set of scores, winning three times and only once falling outside the top 10. His 14th was his discard.

Runner up was Stephen COCKERILL (GBR) whose 720 degree turn in Race 8 coupled with the final day's abandonment, put paid to his hopes of a title. In third slot was another British sailor, Jon Emmett, who finished with a 12 point lead over Irishman George Kingston. Kingston takes the Youth title.

Runner up in the Youth division was Daniel MIHELIC from Croatia who finished sixth overall. Third place went to Jean Baptiste BERNAZ (FRA).

Top woman was current Womens' World Radial champion, Katarzyna SZOTYNSKA from Poland. She came in at 14th overall. Second placed female was Charlotte DOBSON (GBR) at 24th and Ciara PEELO (IRL) was third at 32nd.

Charlotte DOBSON(GBR) won the Womens' Youth championship with Alison YOUNG(GBR) second and the Irish Claudine MURPHY third.

In the Silver fleet it was Portugal's turn for the top prize with Joao Vidinha a comfortable seven points ahead of Alberto PADILLA (ESP). Irish sailor Alexander Dolan took third.

There was a great result in the Bronze fleet for local eighteen year old Michael GUNNING who finished 10 points ahead of another Northern Ireland sailor, Tristan McMillan. In third place came Tomas MONTEIRO of Portugal.

The Championships were sponsored by UK Sport, the Northern Ireland Events Company, North Down Borough Council and Rooster Sailing.
This event was the biggest one design competition ever staged in Northern Ireland and attracted 200 sailors from 21 countries including one each from Australia and USA.
