Formula Championship Underway

Sail Melbourne
Elwood SC, Melbourne

After a gale force start to their series yesterday that kept the Formula Windsurfers ashore, race officials at Elwood Sailing Club managed to get four races finished today in the Formula Windsurfing Championships at the Sail Melbourne Regatta.

The World Champion, Steve ALLEN, was never threatened, winning all four races for four points, from the ‘Viking’, Jesper VESTERSTROM (DEN), on eight points, with young Sean O’BRIEN (AUS) holding down third overall for a total of 16.
Ian FOX from Elwood S.C. said conditions for this morning’s first race had the board sailors in a 25 knot nor-westerly on very choppy seas, but by Race 2, the wind had abated somewhat and became extremely patchy, leaving some competitors in holes whilst others were lucky enough to avoid the dead spots, Allen included.

”Race 2 conditions made it hard for the board sailors to make a gear choice, it was patchy with a lot of winds shifts. It was ideal after lunch though, perfect for Windsurfing, a beautiful sea breeze filled in, a 15 or so knot southerly, making it a really hot contest” Ian Fox from the host club said.

Racing continues in the Sail Melbourne event tomorrow. Full results are available on the event website at the address below.
