Obituary

Andre CORNU (FRA)

Andre passed away on 28 August 2003, aged 91. Amongst the many boats Andre designed, the most high profile is the International 470 dinghy, which was designed in 1963 as a modern high performance fibreglass planing dinghy which could be sailed by anyone.
The 470 proved incredibly popular, and a result, it was selected for Olympic competition, first being used at the Olympic Regatta in 1976 for the men’s double-handed dinghy event, and then from 1988 for the women’s event. The 470 is currently sailed in more than 70 nations, with more than 40,000 boats having been built.

In July this year, the Challenge Andre CORNU regatta took place in Brest, France, celebrating 40 years of the 470 Class and at the same time a 470 Hall of Fame was inaugurated.

Andre CORNU was awarded the Chevalier of Legion of Honour, France’s highest distinction, in recognition of his designs and impact on the sport of sailing.

ISAF extends its condolences to Andre’s family and friends.
