The host Brazilian team for the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games has been decided after the conclusion of the Pre-Pan Am Games Regatta on Guanabara Bay. Triple Pan-Am Champion Robert SCHEIDT (BRA) claimed the Laser spot, but only after a very close battle with Bruno FONTES (BRA).
FONTES pushed SCHEIDT right the way to the wire in the 11 race series, with the eight-time Laser World Champion having to post a bullet in the final race to secure his slot in the Brazilian team.
Another Brazilian World Champion, Maurício SANTA CRUZ (BRA) and his Bruschetta team were also pushed all the way in the J/24 fleet by Daniel GLOMB’s (BRA) team. Again a bullet in the final race was enough for the World Champs to hold on.
Other Team Members
Adriana KOSTIW (BRA) won more comfortably, taking the Laser Radial slot with a race to spare. Ricardo SANTOS (BRA) finished third overall in a tough RS:X fleet, but as the top Brazilian takes the Pan-Am slot, whilst Brazil’s women windsurfer will be Patricia CASTRO (BRA).
Other Brazilian Pan-Am team places went to Bernardo ARNDT and Bruno OLIVEIRA in the Hobie 16, Alexandre PARADEDA and Pedro TINOCO in the Snipe, Claudio BIEKARCK, Gunnar FICKER and Marcelo SILVA in the Lightning and Bernardo LOW-BEER in the Sunfish.
