Home Sailors To The Fore In Rizhao
Europe World Championship 2005
Rizhao, China
After eight races at the Europe World Championship in Rizhao, China, the top of the women’s leaderboard is a story of Chinese domination with LU Lianhua (CHN) leading the way. In the men’s fleet however the European sailors are on top with Spain’s Jesus ROGEL SANCHEZ opening up a sizeable gap at the front.
The event began in Rizhao on Saturday, with races everyday, except for the rest day tomorrow, through to the last of twelve scheduled races on Friday. In the 28 strong women’s fleet featuring 18 sailors from China, the experienced
LU began her campaign strongly with a bullet in the opening race. Two second places in the last two races have consolidated her position at the top and given her a four point lead over
SHEN Xiaoying, China’s representative in the Europe at the Athens Olympic Sailing Competition last year.
Mexico’s Tanja ELIAS CALLES is five points behind SHEN in third, with 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship silver medallist XU Lijia (CHN) fourth and SHEN Huanqi (CHN) rounding out the top five.
Amongst the 19 competitors in the men’s fleet ROGEL SANCHEZ leads, 13 points ahead of his nearest challenger Thorbjorn SCHIERUP (DEN). A bullet in race eight lifted SCHIERUP above China’s JIANG Linhua, although the pair are still tied on points. In a close battle for the silver and bronze medal positions Sven STADEL (GER) is just a point further back as is Piseddu RICCARDO (ITA).
