The second final day saw 3 -6 knots gusty wind and five more races were completed by the gold fleet sailing on Kliazminskoe Lake. Rodion LUKA and George LEONCHUK (UKR) hold firm at the top after finishing three more races in the top five. Today is the final day of racing and time is running out for Chris DRAPER and Simon HISCOCKS (GBR) to take back that number one spot.
DRAPER and HISCOCKS had their best day of the finals posting two bullets, two sevenths and a 25, which they discard. They have closed the gap on
LUKA and LEONCHUK to fourteen points and moved back up to second overall but their series score is nowhere near as consistent as the Olympic silver medallists. And that's another reason
DRAPER and HISCOCKS will be going out fighting today, having lost the silver medal to the Ukraineans in Athens they will be all the more determined to take this championship title.
Coming out of the first final day in second overall was Jan PECKOLT and Hannes PECKOLT (GER) but they had a disastrous second day not managing to finish above 13 and now lie eighth overall. Also having a bad day wer Alexandre MONTEAU and Damien GILLOU (FRA) who after a DNS in the first race of the day, a 19, three other finishes in the mid 20s, slip from fifth overall down to 15. The loss of MONTEAU and GILLOU from the top ten made way for 2004 Olympic gold medallists and the defending champions, Iker MARTINEZ and Xavier FERNANDEZ (ESP). Their day's results, including two seconds moves them up to tenth overall and it is more than likely that they will continue to climb the leaderboard today.
There was also better news yesterday for Steve MORRISON and Ben RHODES (GBR) who move up to fifth from eighth overall, Alberto PADRON and Javier DE LA PLAZA (ESP) who posted a bullet in the last race of the day and climb from ninth overall up to sixth.
The Silver and Bronze Fleets sailed near 'Bukhta Radosti' (Joy Bay) in a navigation zone. Leaders of the Silver fleet are Gabriel WICKE and Wagner HANNES, in the Bronze Fleet the leaders are the MCGOVERN brothers from Ireland
Today is the final day of racing to decide the destination of the 49er World Championship trophy with a total of twelve final series races scheduled. Today’s action can be followed in real time online as the boats have been attached with GPS units. The Championship website has further details.
